It has already been reported that the Minister of Education and Science Ilga Šuplinska (JKP) told Tuesday in an interview with TV3 “900 seconds” that the disease with Covid-19 has been detected in a total of 17 educational institutions. Thus, it can be concluded that since Tuesday, at least six more institutions have been added to the list of educational institutions affected by Covid-19.

The epidemiologist stated that among the 23 educational institutions there are 16 schools, four kindergartens and three universities.

In addition, a total of at least 34 children and 15 adults working in these facilities have been confirmed to be infected, according to an SPKC expert.

“Most of these cases come from families where children become infected,” Perevoshchikov said, adding that, unfortunately, there are also at least three educational institutions with local transmission.

In general, the number of affected institutions is relatively small, and according to the epidemiologist, the current epidemiological security measures are working. However, Perevoshchikov urged that the face-to-face learning process be treated with caution, pointing out that face-to-face learning should be continued if possible.

One school in Kuldiga may have to close

Due to the contact persons of many Covid-19 patients, a whole school may have to be closed in Kuldiga, the chairman of the Kuldiga district council Inga Bērziņa (JV) pointed out at the government meeting on Wednesday.

She explained that currently parents whose children are contact persons for Covid-19 patients receive incapacity sheets, but she has a question about those parents who should stay home with non-contact children in the event of school closure.

Bērziņa emphasized that the local government will do everything possible to prevent this, however, a situation may arise that the educational institution can no longer operate, because many teachers have been quarantined. “This is exactly one boarding school, where the situation is even more complicated because the children have special needs,” she said.

Bērziņa pointed out that the situation in the municipality is changing very rapidly and the number of contact persons is growing.

She asked whether an exception could be made in this case in the case of Kuldiga and Daugavpils.

Minister of Health Ilze Hänķele (AP) acknowledged that this issue will not be resolved today, but promised to consult with the Ministry of Welfare and the Ministry of Education and Science on Thursday. “It’s hard for me to imagine that we could broaden our understanding of incapacity for work to such an extent and cover a completely uncharacteristic situation for sickness insurance,” she said. In the opinion of the Minister, one should rather think about the remote organization of training.

“I understand that this does not solve the parents’ restrictions on being economically active, but I do not think that a solution through health insurance seems possible,” admits Vķķele, adding that this situation is not much different from the spring, when such cases were not compensated.

The Minister of Education and Science Ilga Šuplinska (JKP) invited the directors of educational institutions of both cities to contact the Ministry of Education and Science to discuss issues related to the learning process in the cities affected by Covid-19. Šuplinska is convinced that if the teachers of one school are quarantined, it is possible to provide distance learning in the teaching process of the smaller classes in cooperation with the teachers of other schools.

Later, Bērziņa emphasized that the local government is ready to implement the restrictions set by the government on Wednesday to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

She pointed out that if the government had not adopted amendments to the regulations “Epidemiological safety measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 infection” today, an extraordinary council meeting would have been convened tomorrow in the municipality to adopt restrictions to reduce the spread of Covid-19. The restrictions apply mainly to the activities of local government institutions, Bērziņa added.

She noted that the situation with Covid-19 patients and their contacts is changing rapidly.

Until today, there were eight classes in two Kuldiga schools and two groups of children in two Kuldiga kindergartens, but from tomorrow also several students of the Middle Kurzeme Primary School – Development Center.

“Our educational institutions are ready to stop learning interest and professional orientation education, including training, competitions and face-to-face training. Amateur groups have already stopped full-time classes today and will work remotely,” said Bērziņa.

Regarding the restrictions on the operation of catering companies, the Chair acknowledged that the active tourist season is over and now the working hours of cafes could be optimal, as well as the number of seats at the tables without creating additional burdens.

The President described the situation in the city as calm. “Citizens have been actively using Covid-19 saliva tests these days. There are currently no complaints that people in quarantine are violating their restrictions. We will use all possible channels to inform citizens about government restrictions by October 14 and ensure that everyone conscientiously observed, “the President promised.
