The new test predicts the development of diabetes in newborns. Reedus

An international team of scientists published a study in which they talked about creating a test that can predict the occurrence of type 1 diabetes in newborns. Scientists believe that such a simple analysis could in the future be included in a standard study in a maternity hospital.

These data will allow pediatricians from birth to understand the risks of developing dangerous diseases, the researchers say.

In their study, specialists observed for 9 years 7 798 children with a high risk of developing type 1 diabetes from birth. This work was part of TEDDY, a study to identify environmental triggers for autoimmunity and the onset of type 1 diabetes in children at genetic risk.

A combined risk assessment approach includes genetics, clinical factors such as a family history of diabetes, and the presence of islet autoantibodies in a child, biomarkers known to influence the development of type 1 diabetes.

Research group discoveredthat the new combined approach significantly improved the prognosis of type 1 diabetes in children, potentially leading to better counseling of families about diabetes risk.

Currently, 40% of children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes have a serious complication – ketoacidosis. For young children, this is extremely life-threatening, and leads to lengthy hospitalizations, and in some cases even paralysis or death. Using our new combined approach to determine which children will develop diabetes can prevent these tragedies and ensure that children are on the right track at an earlier age – write researchers
