The third flight arrived with Sputnik V vaccines

The Aerolineas Argentinas plane that brought 220,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccines to Argentina and 20,000 to Bolivia landed after 12:40 at the Ezeiza International Airport.

The aircraft arrived with a shipment comprising 120 thousand doses of each component, which will be used to continue the immunization campaign in the country, which will now aim to complete health personnel, those over 60 years of age, teachers and members of the security forces.

In principle, the national government planned to bring 600,000 doses, the maximum that the aircraft of the flag airline can hold in its hold, but Russia confirmed this Wednesday morning that they would only load 240,000 doses.

The 20 thousand vaccines for Bolivia will be transferred from Ezeiza to La Paz by a flight from the Bolivian Aviation Company, which will depart at 15:30. In this way, Bolivia will be the second country in the region to receive the Sputnik V vaccines produced by the Gamaleya Institute.

“We received our third flight from Russia that brought 240,000 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine to the country. 20,000 of them will be for Bolivia. Thanks to the coordinated work between different areas of government we can fulfill this fundamental logistics task against COVID-19, he confirmed on his Twitter account Pablo Ceriani, the owner of Aerolineas Argentinas.

“This provision, which was negotiated and agreed directly with the Russian Investment Fund without intermediaries, will arrive in our country after an intense and arduous relationship work at all levels and thanks to the ties that the Government knew how to build between States”, the Bolivian government specified.

In the last 48 hours, the Russian Investment Fund confirmed through a statement the delays in the delivery of Sputnik V, something that impacts the massive vaccination plan in Argentina, in all provinces. The Fund had promised a total of 5 million doses by January, but will only deliver 520 thousand, almost 10 percent. To the 600 thousand doses that have arrived so far (300 in December and another 300 thousand in mid-January), the 220 thousand that the plane brought today were added. So far, there is no scheduled date for the next flight.

“We are improving the facilities located outside of Russia to guarantee supply to Argentina and the rest of the region. As a result, we will see a significant increase in production in the second quarter. Until then, some batches may be delayed for up to 2-3 weeks. However, Argentina, which was one of the first countries to approve Sputnik V and with whom we have established a strong alliance, will continue to receive the vaccine. We will revert to the original delivery schedule once the update is complete. The Argentine health authorities will be duly informed with a tight schedule ”, indicated the Russian authorities.

Thus, the Fund argued that the delays are related to “the high demand for the Russian vaccine in Latin America” but ratified the will to comply with Argentina. “ANMAT will proceed, as planned, with the technical verification of the Sputnik V production sites outside Russia in the coming weeks,” the statement added.

The truth is that so far there are no dates for the next flights and the destination is not known. South Korea and India, countries that are already producing the vaccine, remain the options for the Argentine market.

The contract signed between the Government and the Russian Fund (RDIF is its acronym in English) It stipulated a total of 4 million for the first dose and 1 million for the second during the course of this month. In addition, another 15 million doses should arrive during February (6 million from the first dose and 4 from the second).

In the Government they argue that the delays are repeated in other countries of the world. The substantial difference is that Argentina will have to go through the first quarter only with the Russian vaccine, which has a significant delay in production, such as the Fund’s CEO, Kirill Dmitriev, admitted in an interview.

“The delays are understandable; the whole production chain has many components, and if you have a problem with one of them that delays things, “said Dmitriev in dialogue with the US news channel CNBC. And I add: “We saw it with Pfizer, we see it with AstraZeneca. And I think there could be some delays with our production as well, as we are increasing capacity … although we hope not. “

The Government, on the other hand, also has 22.4 million AstraZeneca vaccines and 9 million COVAX, but they would only arrive in the second quarter.

The first shipment of Sputnik V landed in Buenos Aires on December 24, allowing the Government to close 2020 with good news. Those 300 thousand doses began to be applied on Tuesday 29. The second plane arrived in Ezeiza on Saturday January 18 with another 300 thousand doses. Since then, the government had to run behind the promises of the Russians.
