Development in the segment of high-end mobile chips is progressing significantly at noon. Chip manufacturers handle more modern manufacturing processes (more transistors on a chip) and shorten the time to market. The current 5nm process has practically only covered one generation of top mobile processors. The previous 7nm process lasted for two generations.

For next year, the top processors will be produced by the 4nm process and the next year should be the 3nm process. The processors for the best smartphones of 2021 will use a 4nm process, with the exception of Apple, whose A15 chips remain on the 5nm process.

MediaTek was the first to show a super chip. Its Dimensity 9000 will produce TSCM with its 4nm manufacturing process. The second in line is the current novelty of Qualcomm, which, however, will be produced by Samsung’s own 4nm process. The same process will logically be used by Samsung’s corporate processor Exynos 2200, which the manufacturer will present later.

MediaTek has already changed the designation of the novelty, and Qualcomm has completely cut off the new processor from the previous designations. Instead of the logical continuation of the 8xx series, where the 898 designation was expected, the new Snapdragon 8 gen 1 processor was given the designation.

Given that Qualcomm would run out of numbers in the figure (top) row just as soon, this is a logical approach. In addition, Qualcomm wanted to differentiate the chip from its predecessors. It is possible that the new marking will be used by the company across the board, but especially in the lower ranks it would have to add some additional numbers. Let’s be surprised.

The new name is a big change, but it’s definitely not the most important. Importantly, the new processor uses the new ARMv9 platform, which is pure 64-bit. The processor structure is again three-clustered. The main core in this case is a 3 GHz Cortex-X2. There are also three powerful Cortex-A710 cores with a clock speed of 2.5 GHz and four energy-saving Cortex-A510 cores with a clock speed of 1.8 GHz.

The structure is the same as the one mentioned Dimensity 9000, which has a Cortex-A2 main core, the assembly is the same, but the powerful cores have a higher clock speed.

Compared to the current high-end processor Snapdragon 888 Qualcomm promises 20 percent higher performance and a significant 30 percent lower consumption. Which is good news, of course, and the batteries have nowhere to grow, so the path to longer life is energy saving.

Adreno will take care of the graphics, but the exact designation has not yet been published. In any case, the ability to play games should be a great advantage of the new chip. There is a package of Elite Gaming functions that will allow up to twice the frame rate or significant energy savings. Rendering should be desktop-level with enhanced lighting effects or shading.

The seventh generation of the AI ​​engine, ie artificial intelligence, will be better able to recognize the spoken voice. To the extent that the user’s voice can recognize the disease. At least that’s what the manufacturer’s promotional materials say. Probably a more practical function of artificial intelligence will be to work with photographs. Leica added the Leitz Look mode.

The image processor itself is now 18-bit, so it can process orders of magnitude more data than previous image processors. The maximum resolution of the camera will be 200 Mpix, such is currently the case only Samsung (for more see Samsung already has a 200Mpix camera, but the competition will use it sooner). It will be possible to record video in 8K resolution at 30 frames per second, while slow-motion video can have HD resolution at 960 frames per second. Night mode can then compose a photo of thirty images.

The modem manages 5G on common and mmWave bands, Bluetooth is in version 5.2 and wi-fi in standard 6E. In addition, the processor is the first to support the Android Ready SE function, so it will be possible to store, for example, car keys in the phone.

The first phones with the new Snapdragon 8 gen 1 processor will appear in December.
