The Cologne triplets are slowly retiring. In the future, only the successor to Ayga and, more recently, the larger Yaris segment will be produced in Cologne. However, they could be supplemented by another Japanese.

The current generation Mazda 2 has been in production since 2014, so the arrival of its successor is slowly approaching. Today, however, is relentless, costs must be reduced in all directions, so Mazda will not develop a new generation on its own, but in collaboration with Toyota. And this cooperation can be interesting for our people as well.
The new generation Mazda 2 could be produced at the Toyota factory in Cologne. The plant, still known as TPCA, was fully taken over by the Japanese carmaker this year, which bought the remaining stake from the PSA Group, renamed it TMMCZ and is preparing to change its production portfolio. Production of the Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1 will gradually end, only the Toyota Aygo will continue in the new generation, and the Toyota Yaris will be alongside it from this year onwards.
It is the foundations of the current Yaris, or rather its TNGA GA-B platform, that the new Mazda 2 is to use, and so its Czech production would be offered. And such a plan is really on the table, and both cars should be produced in Cologne.

Yaris will continue to be produced in France for Europe Valenncienes, where it will be newly complemented by a small Yaris Cross SUV, however, local media sources reject the expansion of the production portfolio with the Mazda model. And so the production of the new Mazda 2 is offered in Cologne, which would also make the car cheaper than if it were to be imported from Japan as today’s generation. This would then help Toyota fill the production capacity of the Cologne factory.
In any case, apart from using Toyota technology, we don’t know much about the new Mazda 2. Although it will receive a three-cylinder hybrid drive from Toyota to reduce emissions, it is not yet clear to what extent the appearance of both cars will match. It is possible that they will be twins. after all Suzuki is thus just starting to offer the Across plug-in hybrid in Europe, alias disguised RAV4, respectively Swace station wagon, which in turn is a hybrid Corolla Touring Sports. Toyota and Mazda could thus switch roles. Toyota offered the Mazda 2 with its own features on the North American market between 2016 and 2020.
