The new MacBook Air and Pro differ ‘only’ in the cooling fan

Jakarta

There are two new MacBooks that Apple released with chips Apple M1, namely the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. The main difference between the two is in the cooling fan.

Yes, a significant difference between MacBook Air and the Pro with the Apple M1 is in the use of a cooling fan. Apart from of course the price difference is up to USD 300.

Both the MacBook Air and Pro use the M1 chip, which contains the CPU, GPU, RAM, and various other chips. The number of ports is the same, as are the screen specifications that are almost the same.

Indeed, the GPU on the MacBook Pro has one more core than the MacBook Air. However, both CPUs both have eight cores, consisting of four energy-efficient cores and four powerful cores.

Now, about the existence of a fan, this may seem trivial. But it’s not like that. This chip cooling fan has a significant impact on performance. The reason is that almost all existing chips, both CPU and GPU, can run faster when they get a qualified cooling system.

The CPU will be able to increase its speed to be faster when the temperature is still below the normal limit – and the power is still available -. Conversely, when the CPU has reached a certain temperature because it doesn’t have an active cooler, it will lower its performance so the temperature can drop.

But maybe this is what makes Apple just provide a cooling fan on MacBook Pro, because it is intended for heavy work. For example rendering video, which will force the CPU and GPU to work optimally for a long time.

If in such a scenario the CPU and GPU are not cooled down, the temperature will quickly increase, which then forces them to do throtling, aka slowing down their performance.

While on the MacBook Air, which is commonly used for lighter work such as typing, browsing, processing photos, or simply watching videos, the four fast cores shouldn’t be active as often, and four more energy-efficient cores work.

So in other words, the MacBook Pro should be faster than the MacBook Air even if it uses the same CPU chip.

Apart from the fans, of course there are other differences between the MacBook Air and the Pro, such as the number of GPU cores mentioned above. What’s the difference?

The battery is bigger, the MacBook Pro has a 58.2Wh battery and the MacBook Air is only 49.9Wh
The MacBook Pro screen has a slightly higher brightness level, which is 500 nits. The MacBook Air is only 400 nits.
The MacBook Pro has a Touch Bar, while the MacBook Air doesn’t. But both of them still have Touch ID fingerprint sensors.
