Hummer finally returned to the scene last year after years. However, no longer as a separate brand, but as a model of the popular American brand GMC. And it no longer has a thirsty eight-cylinder under the hood, but it is an electric car. Last year, the so-called HMC Hummer EV debuted in the form of a pick-up, however, the manufacturer announced in advance the arrival of a derived SUV. This is now finally being introduced to the world.
It is simply called the GMC Hummer EV SUV and differs from the default pick-up primarily by a different body. It retains the style of a rough off-road car, because the electrically operated boot lid carries a spare wheel, as we were used to with the original Hummers. After folding the rear seats, there is a gigantic space with a volume of 2,316 liters, with a wide 1,219 mm access. In addition, a second luggage compartment appears under the front bonnet.
With a length of 4,999 mm, the SUV retains respectable dimensions, although it is 508 mm shorter than the pick-up due to the lack of a body. The wheelbase has also been shortened to 3,218 mm, 226 mm less than the pick-up. As part of GMC’s offer, the new SUV is slightly longer than the Acadia, but the wheelbase is somewhere between the Yukon and Yukon XL.
Given the reputation of the Hummer, the manufacturer promises great off-road capabilities. The turning radius is only 10.8 meters, which is a great value for such a large SUV, which helps to turn the rear wheels, which is standard on selected versions. The ground clearance of 406 mm is also excellent, while the wading is 813 mm, thanks to which this electric SUV can really set off even in difficult terrain. It will also be helped by short overhangs of the body, or the function of the so-called crab walking, ie driving sideways, with the wheels of both axles turned in one direction.
But the Hummer also thinks about driving on ordinary roads. A highway assistant will be available, combining elements of adaptive cruise control and active lane keeping, which allows you to drive 322,000 km of highways in the United States without having to hold your hands on the steering wheel. There is also an automatic lane change function.
The SUV therefore logically takes over the elements of the previously introduced pick-up. Of interest, however, is the lower performance. If, in the case of the Hummer pickup, it speaks of up to 1,000 horsepower (still an “estimated” parameter), the SUV boasts a maximum of 830 horsepower (610 kW). In both cases, however, the top version uses three electric motors, there are already two electric motors at the base.
The carmaker does not provide more detailed technical data yet, the battery will allow a range of over 483 kilometers, depending on the version. There will also be a 400V mains or 300kW DC charging.
In any case, there is a Power Station function that allows you to charge external appliances, for example in a campsite, with an output of up to 3 kW, which is something similar to what the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. In addition, the Hummer will be able to be controlled with a single pedal thanks to strong brake energy recuperation, a function also adapted to off-road driving.
However, although the GMC Hummer EV SUV debuts this year, customers will still wait for its arrival. The first pieces will not reach the market until the beginning of 2023. This will be the introductory Edition 1 with a special Extreme Offroad package for $ 110,595 (approximately CZK 2.46 million). The offer will then gradually expand, for example, the basic variant for $ 79,995 (about 1.78 million crowns) with an output of up to 460 kW thanks to a pair of electric motors and smaller batteries for a range of about 400 km will not arrive until the spring of 2024.
