the new benchmark of the ANC?

Men’s UP TV Live

As an avid UPtech reader, you know that we are a little – a lot – Apple fans. From the iPhone to the iPad, including the Apple Watch and the MacBook, there are many devices from the Apple ecosystem that punctuate our daily lives. Rhythm is the word, as we take a look today at the brand’s new audio accessory: the HomePod mini 2021. Attractive and full of pep, the compact and affordable version of the powerful HomePod speaker is more efficient than its format does not suggest. And in addition, we see double …

Devialet Gemini : design et construction

The brand’s first true wireless headphones at the Phantom come in a complete and neat box containing the case, the ear cups, four pairs of silicone tips of different sizes, and a USB-C cable for charging. The Devialet Gemini benefit from a quality of construction and assembly at the height of what the brand has accustomed us to: neat finishes, a design that reminds us of the famous Devialet speakers, rather sober and elegant. . Each of the two ear cups has a glossy tactile surface on the outside, marked with the logo of the audio specialist, and a soft touch material surface on the inside for better comfort in the ear. For its part, the case offers the same perceived quality, especially on the side of the sliding cover which we particularly appreciate the softness of “deployment”. Pairing button on the front, USB-C port on the back, nothing new to report on this side. The novelty is to be found below: the battery is removable, which explains the overweight of the case, but announces a durable use since it can be replaced. The whole is of excellent quality: it’s clean, it’s upscale.

The Devialet Gemini are connected to our smartphone in a very classic way: we turn them on, they appear on our device, and we launch the association. Once paired, we did not experience any instability or surprise disconnection throughout our many hours of listening every day. Once inserted into our ears, the Gemini are quite comfortable although still a bit more protruding than we expected. If the support is very correct once the right size of tips chosen, the headphones still cause a very slight discomfort after an hour of wearing. Nothing that a small adjustment in the ear cannot correct, but it remains important to note when many competitors – less expensive – prove to be more comfortable even after several hours. In use, the earpads provide the essential controls for playback and change of tracks, but we regret the lack of volume control. Note also touch surfaces that are a little (much) too sensitive, and which tend to activate with each touch of the finger. Easy to use, the Devialet Gemini are accompanied by a very complete dedicated application allowing to adjust the levels of transparency and noise reduction, as well as the 6-band equalizer and the distribution of the sound between left and right. Enough to offer enough controls for a personalized listening experience.

Audio performance: great sound, crazy ANC

Ultra efficient sound and active reductionCredit Photo – Nass M. pour Men’s UP

Let’s not beat around the bush: the Devialet earbuds are very heavy in terms of sound. The performance of the Gemini meets the brand’s very stringent requirements in terms of acoustics. Starting with a very – very – good quality audio rendering, rich in detail. Clarity and precision are totally mastered, and the default configuration already allows us to enjoy the entire sound spectrum on all registers. Classical, rock, metal, hip-hop, everything goes there and with pleasure, as the stereo rendering and fidelity are at the rendezvous. The most demanding will get even more thanks to finer settings and even better adapted to their favorite registers. In addition, there is a total absence of distortion, even at very high volumes.

But the Devialet Gemini do not stop there, because beyond the sound, it is in terms of silence that the true wireless ones amaze us. You will understand, we are talking about active noise reduction. To put it simply, the last time we experienced such efficiency was when we discovered the Bose QC35 headphones. And that was 4 years ago. The Gemini completely isolate us from any background noise, as we have been able to verify during our 4 flights by plane and our 2 journeys by TGV. At maximum level, the ANC filters just the right amount of outside sounds to allow us to hear the voices of our interlocutors, even in the metro. Proof of a very good management between the deleted sounds, and those that the microphones let through. The transparency mode is also very effective by “opening” us to the outside. As a rule, we prefer to remove an earpiece to listen around, but here, the transparency mode allows us to avoid waking up the touch surfaces by approaching the fingers.

Autonomy and conclusion: endurance to improve

Quality design, very good sound quality, and formidable active noise reduction in efficiency. Because the Devialet Gemini had to go fishing somewhere, we found that the autonomy, although correct on a daily basis, would have deserved to be more muscular. On 6 hours announced, the atria actually hold up to 5 hours maximum, and this by reducing the volume to 50%, no more. At 70% of volume (our usual level), the autonomy does not exceed 4h30 on a charge. By adding the approximately 15 hours actually contained in the cases, the total autonomy amounts to approximately 20 or even 21 hours. Largely satisfactory, but perfectible given the high-end positioning of the brand, you will agree. Let us note all the same the recharging by USB-C or by induction, at the same time fast is practical To sum up, the Devialet Gemini are headphones which do not lack advantages, but keeping a small margin of progress in order to really be able to s’ impose as a benchmark. One thing is certain, side sound and performance on a daily basis, there is something to shake the competition. Price: 299 €
