The Netherlands can prepare for storm Corrie: ‘It will be turbulent’

Today there was already quite a bit of wind and that caused damage in the north of the country. However, tomorrow will be calm again. “A kind of rest day,” says Philippe Schambergen of Buienradar. In other words, the calm before the storm.

Tomorrow the day will start fine, with even a lot of sun. In the afternoon more and more cumulus clouds form. With 8 degrees and a moderate wind, it is ideal weather to stretch your legs.

Corrie van Dijk

A storm is approaching our country from the North Sea. And that storm already has a name: Corrie, named after the first female meteorologist at the KNMI: Corrie van Dijk. “She is honored a little bit with this name. It is extra nice that he arrives in the Netherlands, because she could also have landed elsewhere.”

The British have the approaching storm given a namebecause he lands there first. “The expectation is that Corrie will do a lot of housekeeping in Scotland tomorrow evening. Wind gusts of 140 kilometers per hour can occur.”

Almost hurricane force

In Great Britain they are preparing for a storm with wind force 11. That is almost hurricane force, says Schambergen. “It doesn’t automatically mean that the storm will become just as strong with us. It has probably weakened a bit with us.”

At sea, wind gusts of 120 kilometers per hour must be taken into account, along the coast 100 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to make landfall on Monday around 6:00 am and then rage 90 to 100 kilometers over the Randstad during rush hour. “Traffic will really have to take that into account.”

House-garden-and-kitchen storm

The wind speeds are lower further inland: 75 kilometers per hour. “Then it’s a little bit of a house-garden-and-kitchen storm.” Although it remains to be seen. It could just be that the storm is getting stronger.

Course

The course of the storm has not yet been determined. The expectation is now that the eye will catch on Groningen. “That will create a wind-free place. But it can also be 100 kilometers to the south or to the north.”

Whether it will be a heavy storm or eventually a normal storm, Buienradar was ready for some excitement. “It’s nice that something is finally happening again. In any case, it’s nicer than announcing another fog field or other gray stuff.”
