The Need for Strengthening Education about Monkeypox

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Professor Tjandra Yoga Aditama, said strengthening education regarding monkey pox is the right step to increase public understanding of the disease.

“Strengthening education is very important so that the public understands and ultimately plays an active role with the government in taking preventive measures,” he said.

According to him, the government’s efforts in anticipating monkeypox need to be appreciated.

“The government has taken rapid steps to prevent the disease which has now spread in many countries, including in the Asian region,” he explained.

He gave an example that the government is currently expanding the network of genome sequencing research laboratories for monkeypox or monkeypox in 10 major cities in Indonesia.

“This network expansion is indispensable in supporting the mitigation of the spread of monkeypox,” he said.

The former Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Southeast Asia also added that network expansion needs to be accompanied by quality and management improvements.

“This network expansion is very good, of course it is hoped that by continuing to improve the quality and management of the laboratory reference network properly,” he said.

Meanwhile, previously, the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, said that all Environmental Health Engineering Centers (BTKL) were used for monkeypox laboratories.

“There are in Medan, Palembang, Kalimantan, Banjarmasin, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Jakarta, Ambon, Manado and Makassar,” he said.
