It’s a new blow that Sekou Doumbouya has just taken. This Wednesday, the Los Angeles Lakers decided to put an end to their collaboration with the former Poitevin, the fault of a new injury to the right leg, as revealed in particular by Shams Charania, the insider of The Athletic.
Aware of the player’s potential, the Los Angeles Lakers thought they had smelled a good deal by signing the Habs in a “two-way contract” a few weeks ago. The Angelinos were looking forward to the prospect of playing him with the South Bay Lakers, in the G-League, and giving him minutes with LeBron James and others in the event of good performances.

But Doumbouya’s new stoppage was obviously too much for the Californians who decided to bet on the back Chaundee Brown, an undrafted player in 2021, but ready and physically sharp to navigate between the G-League (note, the antechamber of the NBA) and the big league. Not spared from injuries since the start of the season, the Angelinos have made the choice of rationality and thus to rely on a living force quickly, as explained by Ramona Shelburne, the journalist ofESPN.
Cut three times in three months
Flashes and then little, or almost. Between poor performance and repeated injuries, the Frenchman has definitely been struggling since his NBA debut. Landed in the big league in 2019 with a lot of promise, Sekou Doumbouya seems to have been dragging his spleen there since. Despite some great outings in the Pistons jersey during his first months, the fifteenth choice of the 2019 vintage did not manage to follow up. And sees himself “carrying around” from franchise to franchise since leaving Michigan in September 2021.
Because since September and the end of his adventure with Detroit, a team with which he had nevertheless played the traditional Summer League in August before being injured, the winger has put down his bags at the Nets, the Rockets and the Lakers, all that less of three months. And none of these franchises obviously wanted to give a chance over time to the native of Conakry, penalized by his physical glitches in shambles.

A dotted future
A week ago, we thought the Habs finally launched after their good performance against Portland despite the defeat of the Lakers (10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in eight minutes on the floor). Unfortunately, this umpteenth injury came to cut off this momentum and reshuffled the cards, pushing the Los Angeles Lakers to part with their Frenchie.
But then, what future for Doumbouya? It is very difficult to know the current value of the player and especially the interests of possible franchises for the latter. The prospects for a new challenge in the NBA are still unclear and uncertain, and we will have to wait before seeing the French winger on the court again. The 2019 Draft No. 15 is packed with talent, but will need to heal and regain his form before he can bounce back. If no offer from the big league reaches the table, the former CSP Limoges player could turn to a return to Europe or even to the French championship, even if this option is not yet on the agenda.
