The Nazarbayev family commented for the first time on the riots in Kazakhstan

Aliya Nazarbayeva, the youngest daughter of former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, published a social media post in which she commented for the first time on mass protests in Kazakhstan.

Aliya called the incident “tragic events” and expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.

“Let this cruel lesson for all of us be the last in our history. It is wrong when people die in peacetime,” wrote Aliya Nazarbayeva. She thanked “for the moral support of her father at the moment.” “He receives a lot of messages these days from residents of different regions,” added the daughter of the first president of Kazakhstan.

Nursultan Nazarbayev himself has not appeared in public since December 28, 2021. He did not comment on the large-scale protests unfolding in the country, although he usually addressed the nation on key topics. Rumors about his illness and even death circulate in the opposition press and social networks. Some media reported that he and his family flew away from Kazakhstan.

However, the press secretary of the former president claims that Nursultan Nazarbayev did not leave Kazakhstan and is now in the capital. According to him, Nazarbayev “holds a number of consultative meetings and is in direct contact with the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.”

Nazarbayev’s eldest daughter Dariga has already missed two meetings of the Majilis (lower house) of the Kazakh Parliament, her aides explained this by infection with the coronavirus.

Protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2 and lasted for about a week. The reason for them was a two-fold increase in fuel prices. At the same time, one of the slogans of the protesters was “Shal, ket!”, which translates as “Old man, go away!”. The protesters were referring to Nursultan Nazarbayev, who, after leaving the presidency of Kazakhstan, retained significant powers.
