The National Stadium in Warsaw is being turned into a field hospital for Covid-19 patients / Article / LSM.lv

The Polish government has decided to turn the National Stadium in Warsaw into a field hospital to deal with the country’s rapidly growing number of Covid-19 patients, the AP reported on Monday. In Poland, for the first time during a pandemic, a stadium will be adapted to the needs of a medical institution.

The treatment rooms at Poland’s largest stadium, PGE Narodowy, will be equipped with oxygen therapy devices and can accommodate up to 500 patients, government spokesman Peter Miller told Polish television. It is not yet known how the staff of the field hospital will be recruited, as there is a shortage of doctors and other medical staff in Poland.

“The number of patients is growing so fast that we need a place to hospitalize those who need it,” Millers explained.

The National Stadium in Warsaw was built for the 2012 European Football Championship, which Poland co-hosted with Ukraine. The construction of the stadium allows the roof to be pulled over the square, but the grandstands can accommodate 58,500 spectators.

A large part of the games are played at the National Stadium by the Polish national football team, including last year’s victory over the Latvian national team in the qualification for the 2020 European Championship.

In Poland, Covid-19 tests were performed on 36,000 people on Sunday, and about 21% of the tests were positive. Since the start of the pandemic, more than 180,000 people have been registered in Poland, but 3,614 people have died from Covid-19.
