Khan, 67, was vaccinated as part of the national coronavirus vaccination campaign that is underway in its first phase. However, the next day after receiving the Chinese dose, Dr. Faisal Sultan, his health assistant, confirmed that the Pakistani leader had tested positive for COVID-19 and was in isolation at his residence.

The COVID-19 vaccine is being administered to people aged 60 and over and front-line health workers in Pakistan after receiving half a million doses donated by China.

The country reported the highest number of daily cases since July last year, a total of 3,876 in the last 24 hours. As of early July 2 last year, Pakistan had reported 4,432 positive cases and smart lockdowns were imposed since Thursday in the areas hardest hit by the coronavirus.

All markets, shopping centers, offices and restaurants will remain closed in the smart lock areas. However, grocery stores, hospitals, pharmacies, bakeries, butchers, and milk stores may remain open.

Official data shows that in Pakistan 61 people have died in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 13,717, and the country’s health officials said they are suffering a third wave of the pandemic.

The Chinese Sinopharm vaccine is the same one that arrived in our country on March 12, almost in the midst of total secrecy. That day 3,000 doses of the Chinese vaccine arrived, obtained as a donation through a cooperation with the United Arab Emirates and days later they began to be distributed in four health regions: Asunción, Central, Itapúa and Alto Paraná.

The two vaccines developed by the public laboratory Sinopharm together with its subsidiary China National Biotec Group (CNBG) use the classic inactivated virus technique and have an efficiency rate of 79%, the pharmaceutical group announced last week.
