The mysterious suicide of Miroslava Stern, the actress who fled the Nazis, conquered Mexico and died with the photo of Luis Miguel Dominguín, her last lover, in her hands

It has no waste. The biography of Luis Miguel Dominguín, the most mediatic bullfighter of the last Franco regime, contains episodes that still surprise us, despite the fact that practically his entire life has passed in the headlines. This is the truth: he was a man as controversial as his son, Miguel Bosé, or more. He even starred in, albeit tangentially, true sentimental tragedies, love dramas that ended as Romeo and Juliet: in suicide. We talk about his relationship with Miroslava Stern, one of the most beautiful actresses in Mexican cinema and probably the most spectacularly beautiful actress of her time.

The Czech actress Miroslava Stern was the lover of Luis Miguel Dominguín.

The 1950s were his, at least in Mexico, the country where he ended up at age 15. Miroslava Stern reigned as a diva in the golden age of Mexican cinemaBut his first years on the face of the earth were not easy at all. Stern was born on February 26, 1926 in the city of Prague. Her biological parents passed away and she was adopted by a Jewish doctor and psychoanalyst, Oskar Štern, and his wife Miroslava Bečka Stern, right away. victims of persecution by the Nazis as soon as World War II broke out.

The whole family went held in a concentration camp from which, miraculously, they managed to get out alive after three weeks. In 1941 they were already heading to Mexico, and as soon as Miroslava arrived, he continued on his way to New York, where he studied English and Spanish. In 1944 he obtained a scholarship to study acting in California. In 1945 he returned to Mexico for a painful reason: the death of his mother.

His unofficial biography tells that, Before her 20th birthday, Miroslava Stern had already tried to commit suicide twice: one for the death of her first boyfriend and one for her mother. Her mental balance was fragile, a weakness that made her especially vulnerable to predators. One of them was Jesús Jaime Gómez Obregón, alias ‘El Bambi’, whom he married shortly after his mother died. The marriage only lasted a few months: he had used her to disguise that he was homosexual. Luckily, he soon began his film career and immersed himself in filming. In 1947 he shot a blockbuster: ‘To fly young!’, With Mario Moreno Cantinflas. The success was such that he shot three more films in Hollywood, one of them with Mel Ferrer. He was already a star.

His friendship with the director Robert Rossen, a former member of the communist party, had her included in the ‘Hollywood blacklist’ that the infamous Committee on Un-American Activities, with which Miroslava had to return to Mexico. The rumors that arose with his death, those that said that he was actually a russian spy, are probably due to this circumstance.

All this rumor mill led to his being denied entry into Spain, a country he wanted to visit after having attended the Venice Festival with the Mexican delegation in 1954. It was precisely on the border where he met Luis Miguel Dominguín, close friend of Francisco Franco, which endorsed her to enter. They started an express romance in which, in addition to falling in love, she legitimized herself and he advertised himself. In Madrid they were seen together frequently, and when Miroslava Stern He returned to Mexico and said that he had met the “most interesting man in his life.”

Miroslava Stern was only 29 when she took her own life, taking an overdose of barbiturates. Her spectacular death (they found her in her apartment, lying on the bed, with three letters in one hand (for her father and brother) and the photo of Luis Miguel Dominguín in the other) it unleashed all kinds of theories in the press.

Two hypotheses tried to explain the death of such a young, beautiful and successful actress. The first holds that It broke his heart to learn that the bullfighter had married the Italian actress Lucía Bosé at a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas. The second affirms that the one who broke her heart was not Dominguín, but Cantinflas. The actor was happily married to Valentina Ivanova and he had confirmed by letter that he did not intend to leave her.

In the end, it was his father who put some logic into this cruel but not unexpected death. Oscar Stern He explained that nerves had always been the Achilles heel of his daughter Miroslava, especially after the family fled from the concentration camp and their grandmother had to be locked up there. The psychosis he suffered was a product of what he experienced in the German invasion to Czechoslovakia: when in Prague she remained hidden for more than 36 hours in continuous nervous tension under the bombing unleashed by the Germans.

Miroslava suffered so intense depressions, that it was necessary to give him special treatments. “She was sick with nerves. For days we had been noticing her very depressed, melancholic nervous and that is why a doctor was treating her, “said her father, who also said that he did not know that his daughter was in love with him. bullfighter Dominguín.

In the letter that he left his brother, Miroslava Stern mention to Luis Miguel Dominguín, but not with pain. Write: “My Yvo, forgive me for causing you pain, forgive me everything, but I can no longer live. Believe me I love you terribly but it would be me alone a nuisance and a shame for you. When you remember me remember without remorse and without pain. I’ll feel better, but I can’t go on … Write and send the silver bell to Luis Miguel Dominguín and be happy. I ask you. “In statements to the press, Dominguín mourned the death of her friend. “I cannot conceive that a woman so beautiful and who had such a splendid career could have made such an extreme decision.”
