The Mu variant of Covid-19 arrives in Spain

Earlier this month, September, the World Health Organization defined the new variant of the coronavirus, Mu, found in Colombia, as a “variant of interest”. As its incidence has increased in different countries, both the World Health Organization experts, as well as those in Europe, have begun to show their concern, since it has an increasing incidence.

Mu is a variant of interest to all international organizations today. In Spain they have already been detected dozens of cases, but it is still incipient. However, it has already spread significantly to other countries such as the United States, where it is described as an “immediate threat.”

Protection of Covid-19 vaccines against the Mu variant

There is still no clear data on the protection offered by Covid-19 vaccines against the new variant of the coronavirus. However, it is believed that it might be able to evade protection that some types of antibodies and Covid-19 vaccines provide. Despite this, there is no conclusive data regarding this.

What the experts do point out as something protective against this variant is the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. They claim it would be “very effective” against all strains of the coronavirus studied so far. In any case, the Mu variant does not yet pose “an immediate threat.”

Variants of the coronavirus

For now there are four variants of the coronavirus that “concern” the scientific community of the entire world. These are the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta variants. The latter is the one that has caused most of the coronavirus infections in the last wave worldwide. In addition, it has significantly affected the younger population, who are those who had not previously perceived the coronavirus much, in terms of hospitalizations.

Origin of the Mu variant

The variant of the Mu coronavirus, according to the established order of the greek alphabet, was detected for the first time in Colombia last January. It has already appeared in several outbreaks in South America and Europe, especially, although there are also in other countries such as the United States. It has a significant presence in its place of origin, Colombia, with 39% of cases, and in Ecuador, with 13% of coronavirus infections.
