The most unusual presentation of an SUV ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – Auto

Thirty years ago, in early January 1992, at the North American Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler unveiled the then-famous Jeep Grand Cherokee. This performance began, to put it mildly, unusually. First, company president Bob Lutz drove the city’s main streets.

Then the brand new SUV climbs the granite steps of the pavilion at the Cobo Exhibition Center and … crashes through the glass wall, goes inside and stops most calmly in front of those waiting for the premiere. Speaking to reporters, the head of the company exclaimed: “It was a really hellish trip, because the Grand Cherokee is really a hell of a car.”

In fact, the innovation at the time was a car built, as they say, from scratch. It gets a fresh, modern design and a different, more comfortable interior. At the same time, it retains excellent cross-country ability, and road performance is even improving. Significantly, the Grand Cherokee was the first SUV in the world to have an airbag for the driver as standard equipment.

Initially, the model was equipped with one of two types of gasoline engines: in-line “six” with a displacement of 4.0 liters and 190 hp. (305 Nm) or a 5.2-liter V8 that develops 220 hp. (386 Nm). Since 1995, 2.5-liter VM Motori turbodiesels with 115 hp have also been fitted to European cars. C. (300 Nm).

For the production of cars, Grand Cherokee Chrysler specially built a plant in Detroit, on the site of the former assembly plant in Jefferson North. No less than a billion dollars have been invested in its construction. But it was all worth the candle. The car quickly gained popularity.

Sales of the Jeep Grand Cherokee began in April 1992. By 1998, a total of 1,647,188 units had been sold. Interestingly, the export models for Europe are manufactured in a factory in the Austrian city of Graz.
