In the parish of Koknese in the district of Aizkraukle, the production of green electricity has started with the largest solar power plant in the region so far – Koknese SES. With an installed capacity of 5.3 MW, it will produce at least 5,200 MWh of renewable energy per year, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 2,100 homes in the Aizkraukle region. More than four million Latvian investors invested in the creation of Koknese SES.
The newly opened SES was developed with a connection to the local distribution infrastructure, so the green electricity produced in Koknese will be consumed by local residents and companies in the future.
Leons Līdums, chairman of the Aizkraukle county council, says: “Historically, our county has produced green electricity with Pļaviņu HPP to consumers throughout Latvia. The opening of Koknese SES places the county of Aizkraukle among those cities where a large part of their own energy is produced directly by the solar power plant. This is especially important in the summer months, when there is a lot of sun, but little water in the Daugava.”
Koknese SES is the owner of the fund “Merito Sustainable Energy Fund I” managed by the domestic investment company “Merito Partners”, which is currently the largest operator of solar power plants in Latvia. He has attracted experienced experts from the renewable energy project developer “Saules Energy” to implement the plan.
More than four million euros of Latvian capital have been invested in the Koknese SES project, including a 2.1 million euro loan from the ALTUM Development Finance Institute for the stability of companies from European funds.
Līga Mellēna, Head of Energy Efficiency at ALTUM Enterprises, emphasizes: “The Koknese SES project is an example of how, as a result of cooperation between domestic entrepreneurs and local government, attracting funding from European funds from ALTUM, sustainable projects that serve the whole society. created.”
Mikus Janvars, co-founder and managing partner of “Merito Partners”, says: “By attracting funds from more than 80 private and institutional investors in Latvia, the construction of six new solar power plants was brought implemented in Zilupe, Brenguli, Inčukaln, Carnikava, Kalkūne and now also in Koknes with a total capacity of more than 43 MW. This autumn we will open two more power plants in Cēsis and Valmiera. The eight new SES will produce at least 70,000 MWh of electricity per year, providing green power to more than 35,000 households across Latvia. It is possible to implement an ambitious project of this scale within two years, thanks to the cooperation partners’ understanding of why it is necessary to invest in infrastructure development in the regions and rapidly increasing the proportion of green electricity in the national economy. Latvia.”
The construction work of the Koknese SES project and the installation work of 9,500 solar panels was carried out by the general contractor “KL Systems”, which has been implementing ambitious projects of solar power plants in Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and other parts of the world for more than 13 years.
In creating and operating the solar power plant in Koknes, much attention is paid to the conservation and protection of the biological diversity of the environment. The fence surrounding the SES Ground-Governful-Fence. Over time, a biological meadow for sheep grazing will be cultivated in the Koknese SES area. On the other hand, after completing their work, the panels of the solar power plant will be recycled according to the requirements and their parts will be reused.
