The doctor Pedro Cavadas warned of the difficulties of eradicating the coronavirus even before the first vaccine against the disease is given. The surgeon, in his most pessimistic forecast about the evolution of covid and the distribution of doses to deal with the pandemic, predicted that the coronavirus would persist until at least the end of 2022.
The Valencian doctor, who had previously been one of the first voices in the scientific community to warn of the serious risks involved in covidwas once again described as “alarmist”.
Pedro Cavadaswhich is part of the forbes listof the best doctors for his achievements in the field of reconstructive surgery, argued his theses on the fact that the process to vaccinate against coronavirus to the entire world population would take “several years”, as it is happening.
This asymmetric distribution of doses has caused enormous inequalities between rich countries, where nearly seventy percent of their inhabitants are protected against covid, and the poor. This situation has allowed the pandemic to persist and has led to the proliferation of new variants of the coronavirus such as BA.4 and BA.5 -omicron sublineages- that are behind the rebound in infections that are being registered today in Spain.
Pedro Cavadas predicted that until the end of 2022 the mask would not become optional. In our country, the face mask is still mandatory in places such as medical centers, pharmacies and public transport and the Government is not in the business of changing the regulations.
In fact, epidemiologists already take for granted that Spain is immersed in the seventh wave of coronavirus. Since the beginning of June, infections and income have increased progressively. In fact, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health, there are 9,500 people hospitalized with covid, which represents an increase of twenty percent in just four days. Today about eight percent of the beds are occupied by patients affected by the coronavirus. This percentage stands at five percent in the case of ICUs, with 433 patients admitted.
Emergency doctors sound the alarm
The healthcare pressure figures are still far from those recorded in previous waves of coronavirus. However, the Spanish Society of Emergency and Emergency Medicine (SEMES) has warned that the Emergency services throughout Spain are “saturated”, since the seventh wave of covid infections has generated an increase in the demand for care that has caused that in some autonomous communities the increase in the load is around 30 percent.
Along the same lines, the Valencian Society of Preventive Medicine and Public Health (SVMPSP) has urged the Ministry of Health this Thursday to react and adopt measures in the face of hospital occupation «out of control» by the coronavirus, a pandemic that has warned that “it is not over and that by trivializing its impact and burying it informatively” a better response from the population is not achieved.
The trend of the pandemic and the forecasts of the experts regarding its evolution during the coming months corroborate the predictions of Pedro Cavadas on the persistence of covid and the need to maintain protection measures despite vaccines.
In this sense, the Council of the European Union has approved to extend one more year, until June 2023, the regulation that establishes the covid digital certificate. In this way, one of the main restrictions on mobility is maintained. The extension of this measure will allow the EU States that wish to continue to require the covid passport from travelers who want to travel through their territory, whether they are European citizens or third-country citizens.
However, the national governments have imposed on the European Commission the obligation that before the end of this year present a detailed report in which it evaluates the need to maintain or repeal the covid passport. A temporary period, that of the end of 2022, which marked Pedro Cavadas to think that the beginning of the eradication of the pandemic was beginning.
