What a balcony! The balcony in geraniums and surfinia entwined with vines took first place in the competition under the slogan #balkoNEW the challenge for the most beautiful balcony and terrace. We chose 40 balconies that captivated us. Watch in the gallery. There is something to admire.
The event was organized by Polskapress, Łódź City Hall, Bricoman Łódź – Modern Building Wholesale and Hashtag Sushi restaurant.
The winning oasis of greenery was arranged by Dariusz and Irena Irzykowski who lived in a tenement house at ul. Więckowskiego 87B.
– We have no plot or garden, so we arrange greenery on the balcony. We plant geraniums in boxes and in hanging pots, also in hanging containers. There are still pansies growing in a teddy bear and a rose in a pot – says Mr. Dariusz.
The balcony is literally lost in a thicket of vines that shields against street noise, exhaust fumes and dust. Planted 20 years ago, the climber has grown so much that it climbs not only on the balcony, but also on the walls of the building.
– Every year we choose the same plants because they work well in difficult urban conditions. And their care is mainly watering. Only vines require more work. You need to control its growth, spread the threads it climbs on, prune exuberant shoots, and clean fallen leaves in autumn – adds the winner.

Dominik Piotr took second place, Monika Nowacka was third.
The competition was very popular among Łódź residents who sent 300 photos of their green areas. The jury, despite its criteria, did not have an easy task. All arrangements met them, and the overall aesthetic impression, ingenuity and originality, floral design, order, color and order were taken into account. The difference in points awarded between the first and third places was small.
The winners received valuable prizes – vouchers for Bricoman wholesalers and selected Hashtag Sushi restaurants, and albums about Łódź.
