the Montezemolo villa in flames – Corriere.it

We are alive thanks to the alarm raised by our neighbor. she was the one who called the fire department. None of us had noticed the flames on the roof of our houses. still scared the keeper of villa Montezemolo, the historic farmhouse owned by the di Marco Cordero di Montezemolo, 71, notary and brother of Luca, former president of Fiat, Ferrari and Confindustria as well as founder of the transport company Italo. The farmhouse, renovated a few years ago, is located on the San Martino road, hidden by the woods of the hills of Castiglione Torinese, a town of 6,500 inhabitants in the province of Turin. A residence that has always been owned by the Montezemolo family, inhabited all year round. Mostly used in the summer months by the notary who lives in Turin, inhabited by the in-laws and five other people who take care of the maintenance of the apartments. Like every day, even on Christmas day they were inside their homes when the fire broke out. It was 8:40 pm on a Friday evening. The landlord was in Turin for a charity work – says the mayor Loris Giovanni Loveda who, as soon as he was notified, arrived immediately on the spot -. arrived only after being advised. Fortunately, those who were in the building safe and unharmed. The fire could indeed have had more serious consequences.

The stake

The flames broke out in seconds and quickly they completely wrapped the roof, an area of 400 square meters which covers six apartments. A fire, visible from the whole hill, which also hit the first floor of the farmhouse making it unusable. They really have to thank the neighbor who, living a few hundred meters away, notices the fire due to the acrid smell given off – explains the mayor of Castiglione Torinese -. He immediately called me and I immediately notified the police and firefighters. None of the residents had noticed anything, when we arrived they asked us what was going on. Only then did they realize that they were in great danger. Six tankers arrived from all over the province of Turin to put out the fire, which was tamed only late at night thanks to the use of water drawn from the swimming pools of nearby houses. The fire brigade also managed to save the animals, dogs, cats and even some cows raised on the estate while all the neighbors were available to help those who were working in any way. A real chain of solidarity and collaboration on Christmas Eve by the whole country.

The cause

The causes are still unknown which sparked the fire, even if the Fire Brigade are investigating two leads: a short circuit in the electrical system that powers the Christmas lights installed for the holidays or a defect in the chimney of one of the apartments. The investigations of the Chivasso carabinieri are also underway on the incident. The residents, waiting for the farmhouse to return to usable again, thanks also to the intervention of the mayor of the town, have found accommodation in some rooms made available by the municipal administration.
