Italy National Team is one of the largest collectors of world titles, but the distinctive squad with the blue jersey has already tasted two failures to appear in World Cup.
The Gli Azzurri have only lost to Brazil in matters of a World Cup podium. With four titles, just like Germany, Italy is entitled to four stars on the left chest.
Italy’s glory in the biggest international football event was achieved in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.
However, there are two dark histories surrounding Italian football. The first bitter moment was the failure of Italy to step into the 1958 World Cup which took place in Sweden.
In the qualifying round, Italy lost points to Northern Ireland. Being in Group 8, Italy only packed two wins and swallowed two defeats. While Northern Ireland who became the leader of the standings won twice, drew once, and lost once.
It was the first time Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup after failing to appear at the 1930 World Cup for non-technical reasons.
After failing to appear in the 1958 World Cup, Italy always appeared in the World Cup finals.
Until then Gianluigi Buffon and his friends had to accept the bitter reality of failing to get a ticket to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
In the qualifying round, Italy only finished runner up under Spain. Because they failed to win the group, Italy had to go through the play-off round to get a ticket to Russia.
In the draw, Italy met Sweden. The Blaugults then bagged a 1-0 win in the first leg which Italy could not reply to during the second leg in Milan.
Italy must be a spectator in the 2018 World Cup and now Roberto Mancini’s men are in danger of repeating the bad trail.
Federico Chiesa and his friends certainly failed to qualify directly for the 2022 World Cup because they only finished runner-up in the group. Italy still has the opportunity to undergo a play-off which will be held in March 2022.
