The Missouri National Recreational River is offering a free kayaking clinic this summer

YANKTON, S.D. (KTIV) – The Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR) is offering free kayaking clinics this summer every Wednesday, and most Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. through Wednesday, Sept. 3rd.

Abby Schauer, a park ranger with the Missouri National Recreational River, says the program is a great way to explore nature.

“Our mission,” said Schauer, “is for people to not only learn about the places that we’re protecting, but to enjoy them and be inspired by them. And there’s no better way to do that than to be out in the environment, out in nature, exploring and enjoying the park.”

The kayaking clinics start with safety instructors giving basic kayaking instructions and paddling skills demonstrations.

Out on the lake, participants get to put what they learned into practice and play games.

One participant, Michael Maggied, said it was his first time kayaking, and he enjoys the peace that comes from being out on the water.

“The lakes are the best thing about this part of the country,” said Maggied. “Being on the water is calming, and we’re part water, so we’re attracted to water.”

The kayaking clinics are tailored to beginners five years old and older.

Children nine years old and younger must paddle in a tandem kayak with a parent or guardian.

Enrollment for the clinic is limited, and those interested can reserve a spot by calling the MNRR office at (605) 665-0209, extension 21.
