The midwife accused of the death of the baby in Targovishte, probably inadvertently dropped it (Obzor)

– She claimed that the child had hurt herself

– It’s weeks – he has no strength to do it, the prosecutor’s office countered

The midwife, accused of the death of a baby in Targovishte, is free on bail of BGN 1,000.

The child died on March 20 at the district hospital before he was one month old. The head injury that caused his death was most likely caused by the woman who inadvertently dropped him, investigators say.

Before the boy’s death, a scan was performed, which revealed that he had it

severe cranial trauma

and hemorrhage in the brain

The baby was born by cesarean section on February 25. She was not premature, as she initially had information, but was left for treatment in the neonatology ward due to another health problem that arose at birth. This was clarified for “24 Chasa” by prosecutor Vasil Angelov, spokesman for the Targovishte District Prosecutor’s Office, which is monitoring the pre-trial proceedings initiated in the case.

The baby was initially well, but on February 28, a medical examination revealed that the newborn’s health had deteriorated. An immediate scan of the scan revealed severe cranial contusion and cerebral hemorrhage.

She was immediately questioned

the midwife who was

night shift

against the evening of February 28. The 32-year-old woman was later blamed for the tragedy and fired.

Initially, the accusation against her was for causing bodily harm due to negligent performance of legally regulated activity, which is a source of high danger. The case was monitored by the Targovishte District Prosecutor’s Office, and the woman was given a bail measure.

After the death of the baby, the case was taken over by the District Prosecutor’s Office, and the accusation was changed to more serious – for serious bodily injury with subsequent death of a newborn, again due to negligent performance of legally regulated activities, a source of high danger. If convicted, the midwife could face up to six years in prison.

Due to the new qualification, the case was assigned to an investigator from the District Investigation Department. She was also appointed

additional

complex

forensic

expertise,

which must establish the mechanism of the inflicted bodily injury that led to the death of the newborn, said the Appellate Prosecutor’s Office in Varna. The imposed measure of restraint “Money Guarantee” remains.

Unlike the notorious case from 2015, when the midwife Emilia Kovacheva beat the baby Nicole while on duty at a Sofia hospital, in Targovishte the midwife most likely accidentally dropped the child and he was injured when he fell. This is one of the versions of the investigators, but the results of the appointed examinations are yet to be released. In the Sofia case, the injuries on the baby’s body were several, later it was proved that she had attacked other children, and in the case of Targovishte, the wound was only one – on the skull.

Colleagues of the father of the deceased baby, who works in one of the largest glass factories in the city, also told about such an option – involuntary dropping to the ground. He claimed that this was also evident from a security camera recording. However, Prosecutor Vasil Angelov is adamant that

in the ward on

there is no neonatology

mounted cameras

Both parents of the deceased live in Targovishte. It is unlikely that they caused the injury to their son’s head, as the baby was separated from its mother at all times, was not discharged and did not leave the hospital after birth.

The defendant’s defense was that the newborn himself was fatally beaten. “He was in bed all the time, and at this age he does not have such muscular strength to injure himself,” said prosecutor Angelov.

The head of the hospital, Dr. Ivan Svetulkov, also believes that a baby less than a month old cannot injure himself. He was the first to report to investigators.

“The incident happened during the duty of midwife S., I am waiting for the results of the investigation. She has legal capacity, she has been working for us since the middle of last year. So far she has not been guilty, “Dr. Svetulkov told 24 Chassa.

After the incident, the woman took two days off, then expressed a desire to leave the hospital. They drew up the documents by mutual consent, the director specified.

S. was very upset, and her colleagues told her that the woman was no longer able to work for them. She had dual citizenship – Bulgarian and Turkish. Before returning to Bulgaria, she was a midwife in Turkey.
