María Alayola points out that some increased their cost 100 percent last year

Despite the low sale of flowers this February 14, almost 30 percent, María del Socorro Alayola López, owner of the Valeria Florería, said that it is already a tradition to sell flowers for Valentine’s Day but people still have fear of leaving home and not having home service, lost the opportunity to perform better.

To this he adds that the flowers increased their cost, from 30 to 50 percent, some flowers had to double their cost; He gave as an example the sunflower that last year cost 30 pesos and that this year was sold for 60, that is, one of the flowers most sensitive to heat increased its cost 100 percent.

22 years ago a tragic moment for her family gave her the idea of opening her flower shop, and that is that, the death of her brother-in-law, her husband’s brother Tiburcio Cardeñas Torres, died one night and there was no place to get flowers for the funeral until the other day, since they only sold in the Manuel Pavón Góngora market during the day, but at 6 pm there was no longer any trade.

After a few years planning it, she and Don Tiburcio opened the Valeria flower shop in their home, while her husband was dedicated to the masonry trade, she was dedicated to selling flowers and making flower arrangements for all occasions.

This was the first flower shop in the municipality of Champotón outside its supply center, they have a history of 22 years and 2020 was the first so difficult, the pandemic, the increase in costs and therefore the low sales; When asked about the factors or if it is because people no longer give flowers, she said that people give flowers and more now that they cannot go to restaurants.

However, the problem is that there is still fear of going out due to SARS-COV-2, and being in a flower shop, where you decide which flowers to take because you have to choose from a wide range of roses, calla lilies, tulips, and others, and they don’t want to be prone to getting the virus.

A couple of years ago, Ms. Socorrito, as her clients and neighbors know her, received an award from the Campeche State Women’s Institute (IMEC) for being a model woman in Champotón, the pioneer of flower shops in the municipality, her vocation after being a teacher, since she was 55 years old when she decided to start the business and now at 77, she continues to work every day.

At 70 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she is a survivor when the disease was detected in the first phase and without risk of expansion, so now she is undergoing a control treatment, but a couple of years ago, shortly before the recognition of the IMEC, it also gave him facial paralysis.

She says that this has not taken away her will to live and that she not only bears her ills, but that she is patient and loving her husband, as he suffers from a kind of senile dementia due to a blow to the head.

The only thing in which they modified their business to compete during the pandemic was that they can place their order and just go and look for it, a kind of self-service since they can make the bank transfer when placing their order. You can contact her by calling 9828280928 and 9821064429.
