The Main Weapon Mask to Prevent Covid-19, The Second Fortress Vaccine

Prof. Dr. dr. Soedjatmiko, Sp.A(K), Msi. Member of the Indonesian Expert Advisory Committee, Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (ITAGI) says vaccines are not the only major protection.

“The main protection is that the virus does not enter our bodies, our children or our families,” he said in the Productive Dialogue of the Spirit of the Committee for the Handling of Covid-19 and the National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN) with the theme “Readiness to Live Side by side with Covid-19”. 19”, Tuesday (7/9/2021).

The best option for today’s society, is to remain disciplined and familiarize themselves with health protocols as a way to a new order of life.

“The virus will continue for all time, who knows how long it will take, what’s important now is that we don’t want a wave in October in society, starting from ourselves to protect our families, our children, so we don’t enter the virus into our bodies,” he explained.

Because the virus is everywhere, and targets the human body, there are several steps that must be taken, namely, washing hands, wearing masks, closing tightly, nose, mouth, chin and cheeks.

“At that time, those who wear masks will be protected from the virus, no matter what variant they will be able to enter. Therefore, the mask should not be loose, do not sag, because that is the main thing,” he said.

Even if you are doing activities outside the office, the mask cannot be taken off at all, for example, when you are on public transportation, at the office, and chatting. Masks are the main weapon to prevent Covid-19, while vaccines are the second bastion. “Research in Melbourne, in just 10 seconds our masks sag, delta variants will enter,” he explained.

He also recommended, especially for those who frequently go out, at home should still wear a mask. “Even though we’ve showered, washed our hair, changed clothes, but if the virus has already entered our respiratory tract, when we talk then droplet, can pass it on to our children. So it’s best if you stay at home wearing a mask,” he said.

About uncomfortable and stuffy, Prof. Soedjatmiko asserted, no problem. Because in a new life, you must be ready to live side by side with the corona virus.

The second thing that is no less important, is the vaccine. Because the vaccine will be very useful, if the virus has already escaped when accidentally eating, chatting, then the mask sag even for a moment, the virus will enter, then the vaccine will stimulate the body’s immunity and will absorb the virus.

“Research in China and Thailand shows that masks only protect 77-79 percent, while vaccines protect 65-95 percent, but it really depends on the number of viruses and virus variants. So even though you have been vaccinated, you still wear a mask, cover your nose, mouth, cheeks and chin, so as to prevent the virus from entering, if you have already entered, the vaccine will be blocked, because vaccines are a second fortress,” he explained.

Regarding who should be vaccinated, said Professor Soedjatmiko, everyone is at risk. But the priority of the elderly. “I recommend all the elderly and all adults, to be vaccinated if there are comorbidities, it’s okay as long as it’s stable,” said Professor Soedjatmiko. (man/ipg)
