The love for Jever has always been what drives him

Jever

Without his commitment, the wonderful yellow villa on Schlosserplatz would no longer exist: Edo Albers, Jevers’ deputy mayor from 1976 to 1981 and member of the council until 1991, will celebrate his 75th birthday this Monday, December 7th.

The philosopher Karl Jaspers spent his childhood and youth with his grandparents in the villa on Schlosserplatz, built in 1857. But in the 1970s the classicist villa was supposed to be torn down – there were plans to build a supermarket there. Without further ado, Edo Albers bought the villa in 1976/77 and renovated it. “Save the old town” – that was his motivation to return to Jever at the time. The young lawyer and notary, who grew up in Schlosserplatz 1, had actually planned to settle in Bremerhaven.

“But then there were plans to build a giant street from Wittmund right through Jever’s old town,” Albers recalls the town planning of the 1960s and 1970s. Most of the old houses up to the church square should be demolished for this purpose – “they were supposed to be dilapidated, it was said”. Albers knew almost every house in Jever: “I went in and out there as a child and adolescent because my friends lived there – I knew they weren’t in disrepair.”
