Born in 1980 in Chicago and originally from Ghana, Virgil Abloh leaves behind a wife, Shannon, and two children, Lowe and Gray. On her Instagram account, family members left a long message paying tribute to “a devoted father, husband, son, brother and friend”. And they talked about his illness. “For more than two years, Virgil has valiantly battled a rare and aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. At just 22, Virgil Abloh had become Kanie West’s right-hand man: he was in charge of the design of his album covers and the label’s merchandising. Then the turning point in the world of fashion, from Fendi to Rome, where he had done an internship at the age of 20. He had created his first label in 2012, Pyrex Vision. In 2013 he created Off-White in Milan, which offers clothing collections for men and women, inspired by the street and counterculture. In 2015 the brand was one of the finalists of the prestigious LVMH award. So in 2018, surprisingly, he was appointed artistic director of the Louis Vuitton men’s collections. LVMH signed an agreement in July with Abloh to become the majority shareholder of its Off-White brand. First great black designer, he was the king of luxury streetwear.
