The longest animal in the world ever found, it reaches 120 meters

Jakarta

The researchers found longer animal in the world that live in the deep sea off the coast of Western Australia. They estimate that the length of the animal is more than 120 meters.

The findings were reported in April 2020. The research team, which was aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) research vessel, captured footage of jellyfish and coral-like organisms they call siphonophores.

In the camera footage, the siphonophores look more like a long rope. According to reports News weekthese creatures may look like an organism, but in reality they are made up of thousands of individuals gathered to form a single entity.

With the help of a long-range laser (ROV), the researchers estimate that the outer ring of this siphonophore is 49 feet or about 14 meters in diameter, while it is more than 120 meters or perhaps 390 feet (118 meters) long. ).

The longest animal What has been discovered is a deep-sea predator waiting for the poor animal to touch the stinging cells found in some of their special clones. A clone is a collection of cells derived from a single parent cell for asexual reproduction.

The individual members that make up the siphonophor colony are called “zooids”. These zooids cannot survive on their own, but together they become a sharp, stringy siphonophore.

Not all zooids that make up siphonophores are alike even though they share the same DNA. Each zooid has a special role in the colony, some swim alone, others eat, others sting and so on.

Assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Asheville, Rebecca Helm, who viewed the SOI video, said the siphonophore is a type of jelly made up of millions of interconnected clones.

According to Helm, some of the clones that make up the siphonophore are adept at capturing prey with the help of the aforementioned stinging cells. The animal has a slender body with a long tentacle that hangs like a fishing rod with a hook.

Although it is difficult to determine the age of the siphonophor colony, Helm points out that the animals in the video could be tens or perhaps hundreds of years old.

Launch Science.org, scientists observed up to 30 new species and also saw bright squid, long-tailed sea cucumbers, and several species of shellfish. Their findings add new insights into life animal in the deep sea.
