the lessons of the second round in Nouve

On June 28, 115,129 voters from Caledonia were called to a late second round in 22 municipalities. It has been marked by several twists and turns. The separatists remain in the North as on the islands and progress in the South, where the loyalist candidates are renewed.

[Mise à Jour avec nouveau chiffre participation]

The participation more important than announced

Participation was ultimately better than initially expected. According to the High Commission on Monday morning, it stood at all of the 22 municipalities concerned at 57.69%. It’s almost five points more than in the first round on March 15.
However, in the late afternoon, State services estimated the participation at 35.4%. Voters visibly mobilized in the last two hours of the poll, enjoying a beautiful sunny day, unlike the first round where the tropical depression Gretel had disrupted the ballot.

Even if this general reality maskslarge differences between municipalities: less participation in Greater Noumea, and high La Foa, l’Isle of Pines or Kouaoua.

Coronavirus effect, referendum, local issue… Attempt to explain with Danièle Dambreville:

Newcomers to boards

Another lesson from the second round 2020, theimplantation young parties that are Oceanian Awakening and NC Generations, born respectively after the 2018 referendum and following the 2019 provincials.
They enter the municipal councils of Noumea (it was from the first round), Païta, the Mont-Dore, Dumbéa, La Foa and Koné.

New elected in total for the Milakulo Tukumuli movement, and 29 for Generations NC… including a mayor. AT La Foa, the stronghold of Caledonia together since 1989 indeed falls into the hands of the union established around Nicolas Metzdorf. AT 32 years old, he will be the youngest of the first city councilors from the 2020 vintage.

Caledonia together undermined

The party of Philippe Gomès in decline, it is besides another observation of this ballot. CE mayors, only those of Moindou, or Farino… Caledonia together disappears from the municipal councils of Dumbéa, of Mont-Dore and of Païta. In Greater Noumea, he only has two elected representatives Noumea.

The separatists more represented in the agglo

The separatists accentuate their presence in Grand Nouméa. They make a historic arrival at Dumbéa : Rachel Aucher and Rudolph Togna will sit for the first time on the municipal council of the second Caledonian city.

In the wake of the return to Noumea, elected separatists also return to Païta. After twenty-five years of absence, they reappear in town hall via the list “Your identity, our wealth” and its three elected representatives at once: Louis Mapou, Catherine Gaïa and André Wilson.

At Mont-Dore, finally, gain of an additional advisor: Romuald Pidjot “Together towards a rainbow nation should sit with Emiliana Toutikian-Blondeel and Jean-Irénée Boano.

Between UC and Palika

In the islands, the Caledonian Union wins the three Loyalty town halls:
• Maryline Sinewami at Tide, thanks to a union list;
• Maurice Tillewa at Ouvéa ;
• and Robert Xowie at Lifou, it was from the first round.

On the mainland, the UC keeps the town halls of Canala, Thio and Poum. But it also wins those of Poya, Koné, Hienghène and Pouébo.
On the other hand, the party loses the commune of Kaala-Gomen, where former mayor Alain Levant came out on top.

Koné, Hienghène, Ouvéa, Yate : l’Uni-Palika lost several town halls. He stays at Poindimié, or Voh, and wins at Ouégoa.

The winners of the “loyalist” camp

Among the non-independentists, the outgoing mayors who were candidates will be taken back in their seats:
• Georges Naturel at Dumbéa ;
• Eddie Lecourieux at Mont-Dore ;
• Willy Gatuhau at Païta ;
• Patrick Robelin at Bourail ;
• Alcide Put to Kouaoua ;
• Wilfrid Weiss à Koumac.

Five women in the lead

A woman mayor in Loyalty Islands would be a first. Maryline Sinewami from the list FLNKS Nengone obtained more than 50% of the votes of the voters in Maré.

Evelyne Goro-Off, head of the FLNKS list in Poya, won this second round.

Henriette Hmae-Tidjine retains the town hall of Poum.

Without forgetting the two elected officials who were installed following the first round:
Sonia Lagarde for a second term in Noumea
• and Prisca Holero designated in Sarraméa, where she found a chair occupied between 2008 and 2014.
