The legend of the Latvian amateur theater movement, director Lucia Nephedova, has passed away

On Monday, January 17, the artistic director of the Adolf Alunan Jelgava Theater, director Lucia Nephedova, passed away, according to the Facebook profile of the Adolf Alunan Jelgava Theater.

Lucia Nephedova (1933-2022) was a prominent artist in the amateur theater movement, a teacher, educator and advisor to many Latvian amateur theater directors.

Lūcija Ņefedova was born in Liepna, Alūksne district, but since the age of two, the director’s life has been connected with Sigulda. According to the director’s biography on the website of the Adolf Alunan Museum, at the age of 23 Lucia Nephedova went to Cesis, where she worked as the director of the Pioneer House. She also had her own dramatic group and her first productions there.

In January 1965, Lucia Nephedov took over the management of Adolf Alunan’s Jelgava Folk Theater, where she worked until the end of her life.

According to her biography, while working at the Adolf Alunans Theater in Jelgava, Lucia Nephedova has staged about 150 performances, paying special attention to Latvian drama. Lucia Nefedova also invited professional actors, such as Elza Radzins, who participated in several productions. One of the director’s most striking successes is the continuation and improvement of Adolf Alunan’s tradition.

In 1983, the director was awarded the title of Worker of Merit-Rich Culture of the Latvian SSR, in 1998 the director received the Order of the Three Stars for Merit for Latvia, and this year the director received the Jelgava City Badge of Honor. In 2004, Lucia Nefedova was awarded a Lifetime Scholarship by the Cultural Capital Foundation for her long-term work and contribution to the development of theatrical art.
