The Latvian handball team will be led by Veršakovs / Diena

It has already been reported that the men’s national team will not be led by the current national team coach Cīrke. It was officially confirmed by the LHF on its website on Thursday.

Cooperation has been suspended “by mutual agreement. It is said that the LHF had initially entered into an agreement with the Circus for the World Cup play-offs to be held from March to June this year. However, as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, these games were canceled. and tickets to the World Cup were distributed by country rank.

“After that, it was much more difficult to agree with a German specialist on the qualification cycle of the European Championship, and both sides came to the conclusion that in these circumstances it is practically impossible for a foreign specialist to lead a state unit,” the statement said.

It has been agreed that the team in the qualification round of the 2022 European Championship will be led by its former assistant coach Vershakov.

“In this situation, it was the only logical step, because Sandris is currently working with the team and Dobele Tenax, as well as a month before the first games, it would not be wise to look for a completely new coach, “explains the LHF.

“Both sides actively discussed and tried to reach an agreement on the qualifying cycle of the European Championship, however, the difficult circumstances forced to make such a decision,” said Arvis Juzups, the director of the LHF national team, about the termination of cooperation with Cīrki.

“In any case, we need to move forward and pursue our goal of qualifying for the 2022 European Championships,” he added.

The new national team coach Verkhakov was a little surprised by the turn of events.

“I agreed to the offer because it was my goal as a coach to lead the team, but I didn’t plan to be the main one so quickly,” he says in a conversation with an LHF spokesman. “I was thinking of working and gaining experience for a few more years.”

“Of course, it was a bit of a surprise, because I was sure that the cooperation with Circus would continue. Since the team needs a coach, I accepted this offer,” the coach explains.

It has already been reported that this year Cīrke was confirmed as the head coach of the German Second Bundesliga club “TV Emsdetten”, which was represented at that time by one of the leaders of the Latvian national team Aivis Jurdžs.

One of the reasons for the discontinuation was the difficulty of returning from the European Championship qualifiers scheduled for November. The coach in Germany would then have to spend ten days in self-isolation, and being quarantined would prevent him from performing his duties at the club. Cirke was also not sure whether the matches would be played at all in November.
