The Latvian army has started extensive unannounced exercises near the Belarusian border

Extensive unannounced military exercises involving all four National Guard brigades have started in the south-east of Latgale this weekend, Sandra Brāle, the press officer of the Commander of the National Armed Forces (NAF), assured LETA.

The Decisive Point exercise will run until December 12. The training aims to test the cooperation, command structure, logistics, mobility and decision-making procedures of large-scale units.

Member States of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, including Russia and Belarus, have also been informed of this exercise. Brāle did not specify the number of national guards and soldiers involved in the training, but the Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (AP) revealed to the Latvian Television (LTV) that approximately 3,000 NAF representatives were involved.

The NAF did not comment on whether the exercises are being organized taking into account the crisis on the Latvian-Lithuanian-Polish border with Belarus, but the Minister of Defense LTV implicitly confirmed this. “I have asked to announce military training in the Latgale region, so that our Belarusian colleagues, if you can call it that, know that it is not just the same,” the official told the television.
