The Korean Women’s Volleyball Team Faces Disappointment in the Paris Olympic Qualifiers

The Korean women’s volleyball team suffered 7 losses without a win in the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers. I entered the Hangzhou Asian Games with a bitter aftertaste.

The women’s volleyball team (ranked 40th in the world), led by coach Cesar Hernández González (46, Spain), lost a set score of 0 to Slovenia (ranked 24th) in the seventh match of the preliminary group C match held in Łódź, Poland on the 24th (local time). 3 (13-25 20-25 23-25) suffered a shutout loss.

Korea lost momentum early on, leading consistently in all sets except the last three. With this loss, Korea fell from 38th to 40th in the world.

On this day, middle blocker Lee Da-hyun (22, Hyundai Engineering & Construction) scored 12 points and was the only team member to score in double digits. On the other hand, in Slovenia, there were three players who scored double digits.

In this tournament, Korea was placed in Group C of the preliminary round along with Italy (5th), Poland (7th), Germany (12th), the United States (2nd), Colombia (22nd), Thailand (13th), and Slovenia. They were unable to secure a win against their opponent and finished at the bottom of their group. Even Slovenia, which was considered a worthy opponent, bowed out and failed to achieve any final result.

There will be virtually no spot for Korean women’s volleyball at the Paris Olympics next year.

A total of 12 teams will participate in the women’s volleyball finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. First of all, a total of 6 teams were confirmed, including the top 2 teams from each of the 3 groups (groups A-C), plus the host country, France, for this tournament. In Group A, the Dominican Republic (8th place, 6 wins, 1 loss) and Serbia (4th place, 5 wins, 2 losses), which ranked 1st and 2nd respectively, confirmed their trip to Paris.

In Group B, Turkiye (1st place) advanced to the finals by winning all 7 games, followed by Brazil (3rd place, 6 wins, 1 loss). In Group C, the United States (6 wins, 1 loss) and Poland (6 wins, 1 loss) earned tickets to the finals.

The remaining five spots will go to the top five teams in the world rankings among countries that did not qualify just before next year’s Olympics, but priority will be given to continents that do not have a team that has advanced to the finals. Korea’s world ranking is 40th. Even within Asia, China (6th), Japan (9th), Thailand, and Vietnam (39th) are ranked higher than Korea. In fact, this means that it has become difficult for Koreans to secure tickets to Paris.

The Korean women’s volleyball team, which has lost its global competitiveness, will leave Poland and arrive in Hangzhou, China, where the Asian Games will be held, on the 26th.

The national team will begin its medal challenge starting with the Vietnam match on the 1st of next month. However, the home team China, Japan, and Thailand form the powerful ‘three powerful Asian powers’, so they cannot even be assured of a medal based on their current strength.
