Opposition party’s biggest leader, Lee Jae-myung, made a giant boomerang observation
(Toshiharu Hirai: Associate Professor, Hanyang Women’s University, South Korea)
It is absolutely disgusting. Such a tragedy has turned into a political controversy. And it’s only been four days since that day.
156 precious lives were lost in the crushing Halloween incident in central Seoul, Itaewon. It is a tragic situation with almost the same number of injured. At the university where I work, a foreign student, even if not a Japanese one, was killed. A flower offering stand is set up on campus, wrapped in a solemn atmosphere. I also offered white chrysanthemums in front of Seoul City Hall and on campus. Many of the victims have parents the same age as me. disheartening.
The South Korean government has declared the national mourning period until November 5th. Many events have been postponed or canceled, and some programs have moved on to coverage of the incident.
The day after the incident, South Korea’s ruling and opposition parties, which have always been at odds with each other, sent a message that they will work to investigate the cause and prevent a repeat beyond party lines. The representatives of the government and opposition parties also had a solemn look.
It quickly turned into a political dispute. I am completely amazed.
Remarks of “reconciliation” of the property administration
With the passage of time since the accident, many mistakes have become evident. It caused political controversy.
