The island was described as a “social experiment”. Now it is celebrated.

The island on the west coast of Scotland was known for a dying tourist industry and a child murder. Then 24 families fleeing the civil war in Syria moved there.

Mounzer al-Darsani fled war-torn Syria and opened a hairdressing salon in Bute, about a two-hour drive from the Scottish city of Glasgow.

ROTHESAY, SCOTLAND (Svenska Dagbladet): The wind blows and whips the gray water in the fjord Firth of Clyde. The ferries, which are the only lifeline to the Scottish mainland, have been canceled due to the storm. The weather-beaten buildings in the center of Rothesay can withstand a day of sour wind.

Many shops in the city center are empty or closed, but one café stands out along the beach promenade. The large windows light up the street opposite the harbor. Outside there is a queue at lunchtime.
