The iPhone 12 camera has an interesting feature. LiDAR allows you to measure height

Application “Measure“allows you to estimate the size of real objects using a LiDAR sensor. This solution can be found in the latest iPhone 12 Pro, but also in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 11-inch iPad Pro. What size can you measure? Virtually everything, but in the new Apple smartphone the function works best at a distance of up to 5 meters.

When the “Measure” detects a person, it will automatically measure their height from the ground to the top of their head. The height of the shoes, hair and hat are also included. To measure someone’s height, you just need to move back sufficiently so that the vertical camera can capture the entire figure. You can also set the measurement unit in the app, so we can check the same value in centimeters, inches and feet.

After the measurement is completed, a photo can be taken. To save them, tap the screenshot in the lower left corner, then select “OK”, then select “Save to Photos” or “Save to Files”. If in doubt, you can also find the guide at Apple support website.

LiDAR is a device that works in a similar way to a radar. However, it uses laser light and not microwaves. The device emits low-power electromagnetic radiation and then records the scattering of these rays with a telescope. This allows for three-dimensional mapping of the environment, i.e. for distance estimation.
