“We are prepared to stay here through the night and as long as it takes,” Baltimore Fire Department spokesman Blair Adams said at a press conference.
The causes of the explosion are not certain but the city police say that it could be a gas leak.

From the “Baltimore Sun”, “Such gas leaks were more and more frequent in this city, about twenty being discovered every day, according to reports from the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co”. According to the same source, thousands of kilometers of dilapidated pipes must be replaced but such work would cost around a billion dollars and could take two decades.
