The IAEA adopts a resolution requiring Russia to withdraw troops from the ZNPP – UNIAN

Only two countries voted against the resolution: Russia and China.

Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), made up of representatives of 35 UN member states, adopted a resolution calling on Russia to end the occupation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

According to Reutersdiplomats announced this in a closed-door meeting.

This is the second resolution on the Russian invasion of Ukraine adopted by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and their content is very similar, although the first resolution in March preceded the takeover by the troops of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.

The text of the resolution states that the IAEA board asks Russia to “immediately cease all actions against and in relation to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and any other nuclear power plant in Ukraine”. 26 countries voted to approve the resolution, two voted against (Russian Federation and China). Seven other representatives of the UN member states abstained and did not vote. According to the publication, Egypt, South Africa, Senegal, Burundi, Vietnam, India and Pakistan “could not decide”.

The IAEA added that it “deplores the continuing violent actions of the Russian Federation against nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the continued presence of Russian forces and Rosatom (Russian nuclear authority) personnel at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant”.

As previously reported by UNIAN, Russian invaders seized the ZNPP and the satellite city of Energodar on 4 March. Russia refuses to create a demilitarized zone around the ZNPP. The invaders periodically shoot the nuclear power plant and the surrounding area.

At the request of the Ukrainian government The IAEA has formed a mission for a visit to the plant captured by the invaders. In early September, an IAEA mission visited the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.

On 2 September, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced that two of the organization’s experts would continue to work in nuclear power plants on a permanent basis. Grossi also proposed to the UN Security Council to create a nuclear safety and security zone at the ZNPP.

On September 11, Energoatom reported that the sixth power unit of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, the last in operation, disconnected from the mains. Thus, he began to be transferred into a “cold” state.

On 12 September it became known that ZNPP connected to the Ukrainian electricity grid and receives the energy needed to cool the inactive power units.
