Only two countries voted against the resolution: Russia and China.
Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), made up of representatives of 35 UN member states, adopted a resolution calling on Russia to end the occupation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
According to Reutersdiplomats announced this in a closed-door meeting.
This is the second resolution on the Russian invasion of Ukraine adopted by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and their content is very similar, although the first resolution in March preceded the takeover by the troops of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.
The text of the resolution states that the IAEA board asks Russia to “immediately cease all actions against and in relation to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and any other nuclear power plant in Ukraine”. 26 countries voted to approve the resolution, two voted against (Russian Federation and China). Seven other representatives of the UN member states abstained and did not vote. According to the publication, Egypt, South Africa, Senegal, Burundi, Vietnam, India and Pakistan “could not decide”.
The IAEA added that it “deplores the continuing violent actions of the Russian Federation against nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the continued presence of Russian forces and Rosatom (Russian nuclear authority) personnel at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant”.
