Friday, Gwendolyn Rutten, ex-president of the Flemish liberals, revealed that the president of the N-VA was indeed ready to join a coalition with the Vlaams Belang. In this coalition, could also have found the Open VLD and the CD&V “We will reward you generously, but we want the Vlaamse Belang on board the government”, would have proposed the president of the N-VA to the two parties. Liberals and Christian Democrats, however, did not want to respond favorably to this offer.
In De Standaard, this Monday morning, the Walloon minister-president Elio Di Rupo sees in Mrs. Rutten’s words “the confirmation of what (the president of the PS) Paul Magnette and I feared for a long time”.
“But we didn’t know it was going that far. If the N-VA and Vlaams Belang want to collaborate, it is totally unthinkable for us to go up to government with them again. ”
The Vlaams Belang is a party which is “basically, racist”, insists Elio Di Rupo. “Whenever an extreme right party like this one comes to power, we see how much fundamental rights, individual and union freedoms are severely curtailed. I fully understand that Gwendolyn Rutten immediately said no ”. The Walloon socialist also recalls that the attempts of the PS and the N-VA to find common ground have all failed in the past. He considers that the president of the N-VA Bart De Wever never really made an effort to achieve it.
