The highest unemployment rate in the European Union in May was in Spain, Italy and Sweden

The unemployment rate in Latvia was 6.5% in May, and it was higher than the average in the European Union (EU), but lower than in the eurozone, according to the data of the EU statistical office “Eurostat” published on Thursday.

According to these data, the highest unemployment rate among EU member states in May was in Spain (13.1%), Italy (8.1%), Sweden (7.7%) and France (7.2%).

On the other hand, the lowest unemployment rate in May was registered in the Czech Republic (2.5%), Poland (2.7%), Germany (2.8%), as well as Malta (3.1%). In Estonia, unemployment was 5.5%, and in Lithuania – 6%.

According to seasonally adjusted data, average unemployment in the EU was at the level of 6.1% in May, while it was at the level of 6.6% in the eurozone member states.

“Eurostat” data show that in May 13.066 million people were unemployed in the bloc, of which 11.004 million were unemployed in the eurozone countries.

May data on unemployment in Greece are not available.
