The European Union is the world’s largest supplier of coronavirus vaccines.

The head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen believes that taking control of the spread of coronavirus can only be done by vaccinating most of the world’s population. About this on Monday, December 6, writes Interfax-Ukraine with reference to the video message of the head of the EC.

Ursula von der Leyen said that this is a completely achievable goal and that about 70% of the world’s inhabitants can be vaccinated by the middle of next year.

She also stressed that vaccination should take place in all countries.

“We will be able to control this pandemic only if we fight it in all corners of the world,” the head of the EC stressed.

Ursula von der Leyen said that today the European Union is the world’s largest “donor” of vaccines against COVID-19. In particular, to date, the EU has donated more than 350 million doses to various countries. In addition, EU member states have allocated more than 45 million doses in bilateral donations to third countries, in particular in the Western Balkans.

“Most, almost 300 million doses, have been transferred through the global mechanism to ensure the availability of vaccines against COVID-19 for low and middle income countries. But more is needed,” said the head of the European Commission.

She emphasized that today only 44% of the world’s population is vaccinated. At the same time, the lowest percentage of vaccinations remains in African countries. Ursula von der Leyen pledged to intensify her efforts to support the region.

Recall in the EU named the timing of the spread of the new strain Omicron coronavirus.
