The ‘haunted’ of the 90-100 km Cipularang Toll Road towards Jakarta, this is the explanation

Jakarta

Accidents often occur on the Cipularang Toll Road, especially at KM 90-100 towards Jakarta. The causes vary, on average because the vehicle has failed brakes.

Last night, a collision occurred at KM 92 of the Cipularang Toll Road towards Jakarta. It is suspected that the bus had brake failure. A total of 17 vehicles were involved in the collision.

Why is the Cipularang Toll Road so ‘haunted’ that there are so many accidents? According to Jusri Pulubuhu, Road Safety Practitioner & Founder of Jakarta Defensive Driving Consulting (JDDC), the Cipularang Toll Road, especially at KM 90-100 towards Jakarta, often occurs in accidents because the topography of the road is mostly derivative.

“So that the brake workload will be heavier than flat surface conditions. Especially if the vehicle is freight transport or passenger transport. This means that the heavier the vehicle weight, the heavier the brake workload,” said Jusri to detikcom, Monday ( 27/6/2022).

According to Jusri, the handicap or obstacle on the Cipularang Toll Road Km 90-100 towards Jakarta is a downhill road with momentum that often triggers the car to lose control. Plus the wrong driver handling, accidents can be unavoidable.

“It can be started by the ability of the brakes to shrink or the ability of the shock absorber to decrease so that the car sometimes when cornering there is a high bodyroll, sometimes making the vehicle lose control. Not to mention the grip of the tires will decrease along with the transfer of weight from rear to front (when descending), so that the weight of the vehicle rests on the front wheels. During emergency braking, sometimes it can lock the rear wheels because there is no load (the vehicle’s load is transferred to the front when descending), as a result, the car often twists or oversteers. For people who are not aware it is shocked, he even braked out,” explained Jusri.

He said, when the road continues to decline, vehicle components will experience a decrease in performance. Including the potential for symptoms of brake fading or reduced brake performance until the brakes fail.

“If we talk about the direct cause, the driver does not understand or has no understanding of how to drive a vehicle in a hilly area. So that their braking method only relies on the service brake or foot brake. So when he relies on the service brake alone, the brake construction starts with drums, plates or shoes. The brakes will experience excessive heat. This is due to the driver using the foot brake too much. As a result, the brake ability will shrink. So the braking distance will be long, even the vehicle will lose control, “said Jusri.

What’s the solution? The most important thing, said Jusri, is to keep a safe distance. If maintaining a safe distance on sloping roads is 3 seconds, then on the descent it needs to be increased again to 4-5 seconds.

“Then anticipate maneuvers that we do not expect from the vehicles in front and behind us. Always provide a safe space. If there is a truck behind, we can avoid or give them a chance,” he said. Because, large vehicles such as trucks often experience brake failure. If we are in front of him during the descent, the risk will be greater.
