The Argentine government has extended the time frame for severe restrictions on movement to halt the outbreak of the new Corona virus until May 10, while easing some restrictions.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez announced on Saturday that the measures will be applied only in cities with a population of at least half a million.

Everyone will now be allowed to leave their homes for up to one hour per day, but for a distance of no more than 500 meters.

In the less populated areas of the country, Fernandez said, local governments will decide the measures provided that certain conditions are met, including that the number of new HIV infections does not double in less than 15 days.

It is noteworthy that a few cities in Argentina have more than half a million people. More than a third of the population of about 45 million people live in the greater Buenos Aires region.

The country’s government imposed restrictions on movement on March 20 and extended the time period several times.

Residents across the country are not allowed to leave their homes except for some workers, and only go to the grocery stores and pharmacies nearby.

According to official figures, 3,780 people in Argentina have tested positive for the virus and 185 cases have died.
