– Necessary

At 7 pm, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Minister of Health Ingvild Kjerkol and Minister of Finance Trygve Slagsvold Vedum presented stricter corona measures to reduce the infection and gain better micron control.

– In order to maintain control of the pandemic, new and stricter measures must be put in place now, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Labor Party).

– Now the situation with infection is so serious that we must introduce new measures to maintain control of the pandemic, the Prime Minister said before presenting the new measures.

– The danger of overloading the health service, and the spread of the new omicron variant makes it necessary with new, stricter measures, he continued.

He emphasized that we still know little about omicron, but that there are many indications that it is more contagious than previous varieties.

Nok an abnormal jul

– We hoped for the longest time that Christmas this year could be as before and normal, says Støre.

The measures come after growth in both the infection rates and the number admitted. The Norwegian Directorate of Health warns that the situation is now more worrying than in previous pandemic waves.

– We see the situation as serious. Both delta and omicron infections are increasing in Norway. The number who are admitted to hospitals and intensive care units is increasing, says Støre.

– A rapid increase in seriously ill people can already in a few weeks lead to the health service not being able to provide the necessary health care as we want, says Støre and adds both cancer patients and emergency patients will then be exposed.

Director of Public Health Camilla Stoltenberg says there is a danger of more illness and death than before in the pandemic.

– The threat from omikron is enormous, she says.

Ask the municipalities to prepare

Currently, the children are sheltered. But the traffic light system may be on its way back. The municipalities are told to prepare at the yellow level in schools and kindergartens.

It is also stipulated in regulations that companies such as libraries, fitness centers, shopping centers and shops must operate in terms of infection control. This means that everyone must be able to hold the one meter.

– It is not easy to take the meter forward again, says Minister of Health Kjerkol.

The mandatory bandage requirement that is introduced also applies to hairdressers, dermatologists and other one-on-one businesses.
