The government extends the exemption from the payment of the SUT in articles of first necessity

The government extended this Tuesday the exemption from the payment of the Sales and Use Tax (IVU) on essential items until June 30 due to the pandemic of the COVID-19.

The governor Wanda Vázquez Garced said that this measure occurs because the country remains in quarantine and the government remains alert to changes that could arise from the gradual opening of business.

We are aware that many citizens have their budgets impacted as a result of the closure of their work centers and we need them to protect themselves from the spread of COVID-19. For this it is vital to have access to the articles of first necessity ”, sustained the first president in a press release.

So far the country remains under a curfew seven days a week from 7:00 p.m. at 5:00 a.m.

For his part, the Secretary of the Treasury, Francisco Parés, indicated that Merchants will report sales of exempt items on their IVU monthly return under the line “Sale of Exempt Tangible Personal Property”.

The official recalled that the IVU exemption applies to both the state IVU and the municipal IVU.

“The department again encourages all consumers to enforce the provisions of this Administrative Determination. In the event that a merchant, by act or omission, charges a consumer the Sales Tax on the sale of essential items exempt from the payment of said tax, he will be obliged to immediately refund the amount charged to the consumer, “said the secretary.

These are the items exempt from payment of the SUT:

-Personal disinfection items (such as soap, shampoo and wet towels or wet wipes).

-Tissues.

-Isopropyl alcohol.

-Disinfectants and antiseptics.

-Items for disinfection and / or household cleaning (such as soaps, detergents, chlorine and disinfectants).
