OSLO (VG) Minister of Culture Abid Raja and the government have asked the sport to set up a list of which sports will start only when grassroots sports are reopened. It became known after a meeting on Monday.

On Monday morning, Minister of Culture Abid Raja (V) and Minister of Health Bent Høie (H) met representatives from sports to discuss grassroots sports for adults in light of the contagion situation in society.

At the meeting, it was decided that the reopening of the sport will be slowed down due to increased infection. But the government has nevertheless come up with a new call for sports.

– We want a priority list to be made between the sports about which sports they think should come first when it is advisable to open up more, Raja says at a session for the press after the meeting.

– We will receive a new assessment of the infection situation in the first week of September, says Minister of Health Bent Høie.

– We have asked the sport itself to come up with priorities. The health authorities will consider an opening from 1 September, so we must know what to prioritize. As Minister of Public Health, there is nothing I would like more than to allow for more physical contact, but what we do know is that large parts of grassroots sports need an exception to the one-meter rule. And it is the strongest tool we have to counteract infection, he continued.

Present at the meeting were representatives from the Norwegian Sports Confederation, the Norwegian Football Association, the Norwegian Handball Association, the Norwegian Business Sports Association and the Norwegian Martial Arts Association.

– In recent weeks, we have seen a resurgence of local outbreaks. The sport is also affected. This reminds us of how vulnerable we are and how serious the situation is. First and foremost, I am grateful that we are engaged in children’s and youth sports as well as top sports. What remains is grassroots sports, says Sports President Berit Kjøll.

– The assignment we have received today we will deliver tomorrow with a priority list. The health authorities must consider how far they can go, she adds.
