Russia is facing a sharp increase in the number of coronavirus cases, blamed by the authorities on the Delta variety and the slow pace of vaccinations.

“On the territory of the Russian Federation, the Delta variant is widespread, isolated cases of the Gamma strain have been identified,” the message says.

Delta and Gamma strains are categorized as “of concern” because they spread more easily and can reduce the effectiveness of antibodies.
