The French take the ‘balcony quiz’ en masse every night

The actor started it a week and a half ago. Like many other French people, he stood at the window at 8 p.m. to applaud the French healthcare staff. “All of a sudden I saw neighbors, many of whom I didn’t even know.” So he wanted to do something extra.

“We then turned on the music, with the speakers at the window. The first night many neighbors were dancing, but the second night I was dancing alone.”

That’s why he came up with something to get his neighbors along. He wanted to fuel the sense of community in times when everyone has to be inside. “We started with a pop quiz. I played music and neighbors had to shout which group it was or which song. That grew into the balcony quiz with questions about all kinds of subjects.”

Questions from all over the world

Then it went fast. About ten neighbors participated the first time. “It was really just meant as a joke,” says Cartozo. Then the French media started reporting on his quiz. The audience grew and he was already interviewed by Swiss radio and Spanish television.

“On Instagram my group of followers has doubled or even quadrupled, I can’t keep up anymore. Last night 10,000 people watched live.” Cartozo laughs: “I spend most of the day thinking about the quiz questions. People from all over the world send me questions that I can ask in the evening!”
