It is a fairly classic situation: at the end of the year blood donations are declining. Holidays, vacations, weather conditions, or even a flu outbreak. The French Blood Establishment is launched a call for donations nationwide and in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, where even supplies are insufficient to meet patient needs as winter viruses rage.
In PACA, 5,500 blood bags currently in stock
In PACA there are currently 5,500 bags in stock, of which 2,000 come from other regions. It would take 7,000 pockets have a comfortable stock, according to the EFS. Even nationwide, reserves are scarce: fewer than 85,000 blood bags are available while more than 100,000 are needed.
And if the EFS alerts the population, it’s because the shelf life of blood products is limited : seven days for platelets, 42 days for red blood cells. The level of collection samples must be regular.
